I’ll just come out and say it. Despite living so close to some of the best skiing opportunities in the world, I do not ski. Tragic, I know. And while hitting the slopes for some epic skiing and snowboarding is undoubtedly the most popular activity in the area, there's so much more to this picturesque region. So, for my fellow “other” travelers, I offer up a few non-skiing adventures for your vacation enjoyment.

1. Snowshoeing/Sledding: Strap on some snowshoes and embark on a serene adventure through the snow-covered forests and trails. Local outfitters, like Navigating the Wild, offer guided tours suitable for all skill levels. The peaceful solitude of the backcountry, punctuated by the crunch of your snowshoes on pristine snow, is a truly meditative experience. Our Favorite Hike:  Chickadee Ridge

2. Disco Tubing: Head to The Palisades, formerly known as Squaw Valley Ski Resort. Starting in mid-December, visitors can rip down the mountain to the beat of 1970s Disco music and an array of colored lights to set the stage. Book in advance at the Palisades Tahoe website. Riders must be at least 40” tall and able to ride solo.

3. Ice Skating: Glide gracefully (or not) across the ice as you channel your inner Hallmark movie moment or NHL fantasy. Northstar, Tahoe City, and the newest Ice Rink at the Reno Grand Sierra Resort offer excellent rinks for family-friendly fun.

4. Scenic Aerial Tram Rides: For the best views of the Sierra’s and Lake Tahoe, book a ticket on the Palisades Tahoe Aerial Tram. A 10-minute ride will take you to 8,200 feet and some of the most stunning views imaginable. Check out the historic Olympic Museum, where memorabilia and collections from the 1960 Winter Olympics are on display. The Washoe Display adds history and cultural artifacts from the Washoe tribe’s rich history.

5. For Grown-Ups Only: If you are a fan of Whiskey and Bourbon, Frey Ranch in Fallon, NV, is a quick drive from Reno and Tahoe. The tasting room is open every Saturday from noon to 4 pm. No reservation is needed for the 30-minute behind-the-scenes tour of the distillery. Also worth mentioning is the plethora of casinos in both Reno and the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe.

6. Shopping: Explore unique boutiques and art galleries in Truckee, Tahoe City, or Reno's Midtown District. Find charming gifts, souvenirs, and locally crafted treasures. Tahoe and Reno offer diverse shopping experiences, from upscale boutiques to quirky shops featuring handmade goods. Stroll along the quaint streets and discover unique items that make perfect souvenirs or gifts for loved ones back home.

7. Dining: After a day of winter adventures, there's nothing like a warm, satisfying meal to cap off the day. Enjoy an elegant dinner at the Lone Eagle Grille in Incline Village. Its lakefront view, massive rock fireplace, and unmistakable charm make it the perfect venue for an upscale dining experience. For something a little more casual, the award-winning Rosewood offers a great menu and a fun local vibe. Additionally, Reno's culinary scene rivals that of any big city. There are many options, whether craving a juicy steak by the fireplace, spicy Thai cuisine, or irresistible small places. Check out the guidebook at edible Reno-Tahoe

8. Day Trips: Take a family day trip to the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum in Reno, where interactive exhibits and hands-on activities make learning fun for kids of all ages. The Discovery Museum is an excellent destination for families, providing a mix of education and entertainment. Kids can engage in various interactive exhibits, from science to art. And speaking of museums, The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is definitely worth a look. Trains, artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia related to the railroad's significance to Nevada’s history are on display.

9. National Automobile Museum: If you're a car enthusiast or simply appreciate the beauty and history of automobiles, the National Automobile Museum in Reno is a must-visit destination. This remarkable museum houses an extensive collection of vintage cars, some dating back to the late 19th century. The museum showcases the best automotive history, from classic Model T’s to luxurious Rolls-Royces. It's an engaging experience for both adults and families, providing a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of transportation technology.

10. Hot Springs: Few things are more delightful than slipping into the mineral-rich spring waters of the area's hot springs. At ~105 degrees, these natural wonders are the perfect escape from the winter chill. Check out our story to learn more and find a location that fits the bill. Mother Nature’s Spa has all the details.
